SEO for restaurants: be chosen at the moment people decide where to eat

A restaurant is chosen in Google Maps, in a few seconds, on its rating, its photos and its menu. On “restaurant toulouse”, the local pack takes the top of the page and almost no website makes it below. We collected 200 listings in Lille and Toulouse: the median listing shows 665 reviews, and 69% of the websites analysed have fewer than 400 words on the home page.

How customers search for a restaurant

“Restaurant” is searched 13,600,000 times a month in France. With a city, it stays huge: 90,500 in Paris, 60,500 in Lyon, 60,500 in Toulouse, 60,500 in Lille. “Restaurant près de moi” (restaurant near me) adds 14,800 monthly searches: the diner is already outside, phone in hand.

Behind these searches is a quick decision: where to eat tonight, where to book on Saturday, where to take a group. Diners compare three or four listings, open the menu, check the opening hours and book. The restaurant that shows these answers at a glance wins the table.

The mistakes that cost restaurants customers

A menu as a PDF or a photo

The menu is what diners come to a restaurant website for, and it is often published in a form Google cannot read. 69% of the websites analysed have fewer than 400 words on the home page; restaurants are in this situation more often than the average across trades. Dishes, prices and specialities disappear from precise searches.

A one-page website

44% of restaurant websites do not have ten internal links from the home page, a case that comes up more often than the study average. No menu page, no private hire page, no group page: every search occasion (“restaurant anniversaire”, birthday restaurant, “salle privatisable”, private dining room) goes unanswered.

A main heading that does not name the cuisine

71% of the websites do not have a single main heading saying what you eat and where. A logo or “Welcome” tells Google nothing. 51% also do not describe the restaurant in structured data (cuisine, opening hours, booking, price range).

Priority actions

  1. Treat the Google Business Profile as a shop window

A precise primary category, real attributes (terrace, wheelchair access, vegetarian), bank holiday opening hours, photos of dishes and the dining room refreshed every season.
  2. Publish the menu as text

A “Menu” page in HTML, with the dishes, prices and allergens, updated at every change. The PDF can stay as a download, in addition.
  3. Make booking a single tap

A booking button and a clickable phone number at the top of every page, and the same link on the Google Business Profile.
  4. Reply to reviews

To every review, in a few lines, with the first name and the dish mentioned. Asking for a review at the end of a meal is allowed; buying or sorting reviews is not.
  5. Create the missing pages

Private hire, groups, lunch menus, brunch, catering: one page per real offer, with its prices and conditions.
  6. Describe the restaurant in structured data

Restaurant type, cuisine served, opening hours, price range, booking link and menu link, identical to the Google Business Profile.

Frequently asked questions

Does a restaurant still need a website with booking platforms?

Yes. Platforms bring bookings; the website brings a menu Google can read, group offers and direct contact, with no commission. The two complement each other, as long as the website really exists.

Should the menu be a PDF or a web page?

A web page first. A menu in text reads on mobile without zooming, updates in two minutes and feeds precise searches. The PDF can stay as an extra for printing.

How many photos should you post on the Google Business Profile?

Enough to show the dining room, the terrace, the team and the signature dishes, then add more regularly. Recent photos give diners a faithful picture of the place on the day they decide.

Method

Google Maps results (up to 100 listings) for the trade’s search query, centred on the city, collected via OpenSEO on 18/10/2026. Free website analysis (lib/audit.js): home page, robots.txt, sitemap.xml, llms.txt. No paid tools. Listings without a website, platform pages (Doctolib, Planity, Facebook, Instagram, Google Sites…) and network pages appearing 3 times or more: counted in the listings, not in the sites analysed. The score out of 100 is the tool’s own, which also counts server response time (4 points out of 100). Server response times are not published: they were measured from outside France and do not reflect what a visitor in France sees. No business name or website address is published: only aggregated statistics.

Search volumes: Average monthly search volumes on Google, France, French language, Google Ads data via OpenSEO (DataForSEO). CPC = estimated average cost of an ad click, in euros.

The data covers businesses in France (websites and Google Maps listings in French cities), and searches and volumes are from Google France.
