SEO for car garages: the Google Business Profile brings the cars in

A garage is chosen in Google Maps, as close as possible, often on the day of the breakdown. Of 200 listings collected in Marseille and Toulouse, 57% have no website of their own: against the directories and networks that hold the results, an independent garage with a complete profile and a real website has ground to gain.

How customers search for a garage

Drivers type “garage” followed by their city, not “garage automobile”. Monthly searches: 3,600 in Toulouse, 2,900 in Lyon, 2,900 in Marseille, 2,400 in Paris. The generic term “garage automobile” accounts for 90,500 monthly searches in France. “Garage automobile près de moi” (car garage near me) adds 170 searches: the car has already broken down.

These searches hide two different needs. Emergencies (a car that will not start, a warning light on) are settled by phone. Maintenance (servicing, tyres, brakes, air conditioning, a check before selling) gets compared: price, lead time, makes covered, the option to drop the car off early in the morning.

The mistakes that cost garages customers

No website, or an abandoned listing

54% of the listings collected show no website and 26% have not been claimed. An unclaimed listing cannot correct its opening hours, reply to reviews or add photos: the directory or the network next door gets the call.

A phone number you cannot tap

A driver who has broken down calls from the side of the road. 61% of the garage websites analysed have no clickable phone number on the home page, a case that comes up more often than the average across trades.

An old website, with no title and no security

52% of the websites have no usable page title and 9% are not on HTTPS, a case that comes up more often than the study average. The browser shows “Not secure” just as the customer was about to ask for a quote.

Priority actions

  1. Claim and complete the Google Business Profile

Primary category “Auto repair shop”, real secondary categories (tyre shop, body shop, air conditioning check), exact opening hours, photos of the workshop and the team.
  2. Create one page per service

Servicing, oil change, tyres, brakes, clutch, air conditioning, diagnostics: each with its lead times, its real indicative prices and the makes covered.
  3. Make calling and booking a single tap

A clickable phone number at the top of every page and a short form (registration number, service, preferred slot).
  4. Ask for a review when handing back the keys

By text message with the link to the profile, the same day. Reply to every review, criticism included, with facts.
  5. Move the website to HTTPS and describe the garage in structured data

AutoRepair type, address, opening hours, phone number, identical to the Google Business Profile.

Frequently asked questions

Can an independent garage get ahead of the networks on Google?

In Google Maps, yes: distance, the relevance of the listing and local prominence (reviews, citations) count for more than the size of the brand. In the classic results, you need service pages that are more precise and more useful than generic city pages.

Should you show your prices on the website?

Real indicative prices for common services (servicing, tyres, oil change) help customers choose and filter enquiries. An honest price range is better than no figure at all.

Are garage directories enough?

They bring enquiries, on their own terms. A well-worked website and Google Business Profile bring direct calls, and they remain yours.

Method

Google Maps results (up to 100 listings) for the trade’s search query, centred on the city, collected via OpenSEO on 18/10/2026. Free website analysis (lib/audit.js): home page, robots.txt, sitemap.xml, llms.txt. No paid tools. Listings without a website, platform pages (Doctolib, Planity, Facebook, Instagram, Google Sites…) and network pages appearing 3 times or more: counted in the listings, not in the sites analysed. The score out of 100 is the tool’s own, which also counts server response time (4 points out of 100). Server response times are not published: they were measured from outside France and do not reflect what a visitor in France sees. No business name or website address is published: only aggregated statistics.

Search volumes: Average monthly search volumes on Google, France, French language, Google Ads data via OpenSEO (DataForSEO). CPC = estimated average cost of an ad click, in euros.

The data covers businesses in France (websites and Google Maps listings in French cities), and searches and volumes are from Google France.
