The mistakes that cost architects customers
Projects without a word of explanation
66% of architects’ sites have fewer than 400 words on the home page, a problem that comes up more often than the average of all trades. With no brief, floor area or town, Google does not connect the project with a search for “extension maison” (house extension) in your area.
A home page that does not name the profession
70% of the sites have no single main heading that says what the practice does and 67% have no usable meta description, a problem that comes up more often than the study average. The practice name alone states neither the type of projects nor the area.
Images with no description
28% of the sites leave more than one image in five without alt text, a problem that comes up more often than the average of all trades. For a site made of images, that is so many Google Images searches that never lead to the practice.
Priority actions
Write one page per completed project
Brief, floor area, town, site or building constraints, duration, described photos. One documented project is worth ten thumbnails.Create one page per type of project
New house, extension, added storey, renovation, business premises: with how the commission runs, its stages and the area you work in.Ask for a review at the end of every job
From the client, with the Google Business Profile link, at handover. A few detailed reviews are enough to stand out in this profession.Put the first meeting within easy reach
Tappable phone number and a short form (type of project, town, timeline). 64% of the sites analysed have no tappable phone number on the home page.Describe every image
Precise alt text (type of project, material, town) and a readable file name.
Frequently asked questions
How can an architect appear above the directories?
In Google Maps, with a complete profile and steady reviews. In the classic results, with pages on completed projects and project types that are more precise than directory listings, which cannot tell the story of your jobs.
Should fees be published?
Fees depend on the project, but explaining how they are calculated and what each commission includes reassures the project owner and heads off irrelevant enquiries.
Do social networks replace the website?
They show the work to an audience you already have. The website and the Google Business Profile answer the person looking for an architect in their town today, and they remain yours.
Method
Google Maps results (up to 100 listings) for the trade’s search query, centred on the city, collected via OpenSEO on 18/10/2026. Free website analysis (lib/audit.js): home page, robots.txt, sitemap.xml, llms.txt. No paid tools. Listings without a website, platform pages (Doctolib, Planity, Facebook, Instagram, Google Sites…) and network pages appearing 3 times or more: counted in the listings, not in the sites analysed. The score out of 100 is the tool’s own, which also counts server response time (4 points out of 100). Server response times are not published: they were measured from outside France and do not reflect what a visitor in France sees. No business name or website address is published: only aggregated statistics.
Search volumes: Average monthly search volumes on Google, France, French language, Google Ads data via OpenSEO (DataForSEO). CPC = estimated average cost of an ad click, in euros.
The data covers businesses in France (websites and Google Maps listings in French cities), and searches and volumes are from Google France.
