SEO for vets: be the clinic people find when their animal is unwell

People find a vet on Google Maps, often in an emergency, from a phone. Clinic listings are already well worked: the median listing we surveyed in Marseille and Nantes shows 126 reviews, against 27 on average across the study. The difference is also made on opening hours, emergencies and the species treated, stated clearly.

The mistakes that cost vets customers

A listing that points to the group’s page

21% of the vet listings surveyed point to a network page, more often than the average trade in the study. These pages look alike from one clinic to the next: they rarely say who the team is, which species are treated and how emergencies are handled at that particular site.

Emergency information nowhere to be found

13% of listings show no opening hours, about as often as the study average. A worried owner does not read: they want to know in one second whether the clinic is open, and if not, whom to call.

Nothing for structured data or AI

68% of the vet websites analysed do not describe the clinic in structured data, more often than the average trade. Yet opening hours, phone number and services are exactly the facts Google and AI assistants pick up to answer “vétérinaire ouvert maintenant” (vet open now).

Priority actions

  1. Complete your Google Business Profile

The exact primary category, real opening hours, special hours for bank holidays, services (emergencies, surgery, exotic pets), photos of the clinic and the team, a link to your own page.
  2. Write an emergencies page

When to call, what counts as urgent, who answers at night and at weekends, the number as a tap-to-call link right at the top.
  3. One page per species and per common treatment

Cats, dogs, exotic pets, horses if you treat them; vaccination, neutering, dentistry, with how each one really works.
  4. Get a page of the clinic’s own

If you are part of a group, ask for a dedicated, complete page and point your Google Business Profile to it.
  5. Describe the clinic in structured data

VeterinaryCare type, address, opening hours, phone number, identical to your Google Business Profile.

Frequently asked questions

Why does another clinic rank above mine for “vet near me”?

Google combines distance, relevance and prominence. You cannot change distance; a complete listing, accurate opening hours and regular reviews work on the other two.

Can I ask pet owners for reviews?

Google allows you to ask for reviews, not to buy or filter them. In France, the professional communication rules for vets apply on top of Google’s: check with your professional body before any systematic approach.

Can a clinic that belongs to a group have its own SEO?

Yes, provided it has its own complete Google Business Profile and a page of its own, with its real opening hours, team and services.

Method

Google Maps results (up to 100 listings) for the trade’s search query, centred on the city, collected via OpenSEO on 18/10/2026. Free website analysis (lib/audit.js): home page, robots.txt, sitemap.xml, llms.txt. No paid tools. Listings without a website, platform pages (Doctolib, Planity, Facebook, Instagram, Google Sites…) and network pages appearing 3 times or more: counted in the listings, not in the sites analysed. The score out of 100 is the tool’s own, which also counts server response time (4 points out of 100). Server response times are not published: they were measured from outside France and do not reflect what a visitor in France sees. No business name or website address is published: only aggregated statistics.

Search volumes: Average monthly search volumes on Google, France, French language, Google Ads data via OpenSEO (DataForSEO). CPC = estimated average cost of an ad click, in euros.

The data covers businesses in France (websites and Google Maps listings in French cities), and searches and volumes are from Google France.
