SEO for painters and decorators: tell Google clearly which kind of painter you are

A painter and decorator first has to clear up a misunderstanding: on “peintre” (painter) followed by a city, Google mixes tradespeople and artists. The one who writes “peinture intérieure” (interior painting), “ravalement de façade” (facade renovation) and their city, in full, wins the customers who have a job to do. Of the 112 painters’ websites we analysed in Bordeaux and Lyon, 41% have no main heading that says what they do.

How customers search for a painter and decorator

“Peintre en bâtiment” (painter and decorator) is searched 5,400 times a month in France. But with a city, customers simply type “peintre”: 1,900 searches for “peintre bordeaux”, 1,300 for “peintre paris”, 1,000 for “peintre toulouse”. To be fair, these figures mix people looking for a tradesperson with people looking for an artist, a gallery or a class. Google has to decide, and it decides with what websites and listings say.

The price of a paid click shows it: €4.95 for “peintre lyon”, but only €0.57 for “peintre bordeaux”: advertisers compete for these searches very differently from one city to the next. On the full term, a click costs €3.33 on average. A website that names its services attracts the share of these searches that has a wall to paint.

The mistakes that cost painters and decorators customers

A main heading that does not say “painter and decorator”

41% of painters’ sites have no main heading that names the trade, about as often as the average across trades. On a search as ambiguous as “peintre” plus a city, it is a clear signal to be filed on the right side.

A page description left to chance

50% of sites have no usable description in the results, about as often as the study average. Yet two lines are enough: services, area, free quote if you offer one.

Nothing AI assistants can read

54% of sites do not describe the business in structured data and 84% have no llms.txt file, about as often as the average. Assistants answering “a good painter for a flat to renovate” rely on facts they find written down.

Priority actions

  1. Name the trade everywhere

“painter and decorator in <city>” (“peintre en bâtiment” on a French site) in the title tag, the main heading and the primary category of the Google Business Profile, with the word “artisan” (tradesperson) and your services right next to it.
  2. One page per service

Interior painting, facades and renovation, wall coverings, painting woodwork or shutters: with before and after photos and the town of the job.
  3. Caption the photos

A short, truthful description for each image (“living room repainted in matt white, Lyon 6th”). Google reads the text, not the colour.
  4. Ask for a review at the end of every job

By text message with the link to your listing. Google allows you to ask for reviews, not to buy or filter them.
  5. A three-field quote form

Rooms or surface area, type of work, photos from the phone, and the number as a call link at the top of every page.

Frequently asked questions

How do I stop being mistaken for an artist on Google?

By writing the full trade name and your services where Google looks first: title tag, main heading, Google Business Profile category, photo captions. The more your vocabulary is that of the building site, the more reasons Google has to file you with tradespeople.

Should I show a price per square metre?

Only if it is true and stable for you. Otherwise, explain what makes the quote vary (state of the walls, preparation, finish, height): the customer understands and you avoid misleading comparisons.

Are Houzz and Instagram enough?

They show your work and appear in Google. But it is your website and your listing that carry your area, your services and your number: link them, without replacing them.

Method

Google Maps results (up to 100 listings) for the trade’s search query, centred on the city, collected via OpenSEO on 18/10/2026. Free website analysis (lib/audit.js): home page, robots.txt, sitemap.xml, llms.txt. No paid tools. Listings without a website, platform pages (Doctolib, Planity, Facebook, Instagram, Google Sites…) and network pages appearing 3 times or more: counted in the listings, not in the sites analysed. The score out of 100 is the tool’s own, which also counts server response time (4 points out of 100). Server response times are not published: they were measured from outside France and do not reflect what a visitor in France sees. No business name or website address is published: only aggregated statistics.

Search volumes: Average monthly search volumes on Google, France, French language, Google Ads data via OpenSEO (DataForSEO). CPC = estimated average cost of an ad click, in euros.

The data covers businesses in France (websites and Google Maps listings in French cities), and searches and volumes are from Google France.
