SEO for accountants: a client who finds you on their own is worth the price of the click

An accounting practice is won on an expensive search: €13 per ad click on average on “expert comptable” (chartered accountant), the highest of the law and accounting trades in our study. Every client who arrives through the Google Business Profile or the website, without advertising, is a direct saving. Across the 155 practice websites analysed in Lyon and Paris, the median score is 77 out of 100 (study average: 71): the websites are fairly good, it is the Google Business Profile that still needs work.

The price of the click tells you what a client is worth: an account looked after for years. It is also why networks and online accounting firms buy these searches and work them city by city.

The mistakes that cost accountants customers

A Google Business Profile with hardly any reviews

57% of the accountant listings we collected have fewer than 10 reviews, more often than the study average. Next to neighbouring listings, a practice with no reviews looks inactive, even when it is excellent.

An unclaimed listing

19% of the listings collected have not been claimed by the practice, more often than the study average. An unclaimed listing cannot correct its opening hours, reply to reviews or post photos.

A website that does not answer the owner’s questions

83% of practice websites have no frequently asked questions on the home page and 38% have no clickable phone number. Practices fail the FAQ check about as often as the average across trades. Yet these answers (fees, switching accountant, timescales) are exactly what Google and AI assistants pick up.

Priority actions

  1. Claim and complete the Google Business Profile

The exact primary category, opening hours, photos of the practice and the team, a link to the website, a description of the services you actually provide.
  2. Ask satisfied clients for a review

After year-end accounts or a company formation, by email with the link to the profile. Google allows you to ask for reviews, not to buy or filter them; the profession’s communication rules apply too.
  3. Write one page per client type

Company formation, small businesses and shopkeepers, professional practices, property holding companies (SCI), associations: what you do for each, the documents to provide, how taking over an account works.
  4. Answer the questions that decide

How to switch accountant, how fees are set, what timescales to expect: short, accurate answers on the home page.
  5. Describe the practice in structured data

AccountingService type, address, opening hours, phone number, identical to the Google Business Profile.

Frequently asked questions

Is it better to pay for clicks or to work on SEO?

At €13 per click on average, advertising is expensive for every contact. A well-built Google Business Profile and pages bring in contacts without paying for every visit, and that asset stays with the practice.

How does an independent practice get ahead of the networks?

Not on the city alone, but in Google Maps and on precise searches: a client type, a service, a neighbourhood. A claimed profile, regular reviews and one page per client type are often enough.

Should you show your fees?

Explaining how they are set, and giving reference points where you have them, answers the question every business owner asks before calling.

Method

Google Maps results (up to 100 listings) for the trade’s search query, centred on the city, collected via OpenSEO on 18/10/2026. Free website analysis (lib/audit.js): home page, robots.txt, sitemap.xml, llms.txt. No paid tools. Listings without a website, platform pages (Doctolib, Planity, Facebook, Instagram, Google Sites…) and network pages appearing 3 times or more: counted in the listings, not in the sites analysed. The score out of 100 is the tool’s own, which also counts server response time (4 points out of 100). Server response times are not published: they were measured from outside France and do not reflect what a visitor in France sees. No business name or website address is published: only aggregated statistics.

Search volumes: Average monthly search volumes on Google, France, French language, Google Ads data via OpenSEO (DataForSEO). CPC = estimated average cost of an ad click, in euros.

The data covers businesses in France (websites and Google Maps listings in French cities), and searches and volumes are from Google France.
