What Merchant Center actually does
Merchant Center is the gateway for your products into Google. What you declare there feeds two shop windows. Free listings first: your products can appear at no cost in Google Search, Google Maps, Gemini, YouTube, the Shopping tab, Google Images and Google Lens. Then Shopping ads, which are paid and run through Google Ads.
For a small shop, the free window is enough to start with. Google says free listings are turned on by default in most cases, but specifies that being eligible to show products does not guarantee they will be shown. As in organic search, it is the quality of the data and the relevance of the offer that decide.
Create and configure the account, in order
Setup takes a morning if you have your delivery and returns conditions to hand. In this order:
- The account: create it with the company’s Google address, not a personal account, so you never depend on a single person.
- Business information: a trading name identical to the one on your website, an address, reachable customer service. Google can compare this information with your website and third-party sources.
- The website: verify and claim your domain (tag, file, Search Console or tag manager).
- Delivery: real zones, times and costs. A delivery time shorter than reality is a classic cause of disapproval and of unhappy customers.
- Returns: window, costs, conditions. They are the same as in your terms of sale and on your product pages.
- The product feed: by file, through Google Sheets, through your platform’s app, or by letting Google read the structured data on your pages.
The product feed: the attributes that matter
The feed is the list of your products with their attributes. Without a required attribute, no ad or free listing can be shown for the product. The basic required attributes are the identifier (id), the title (title), the description (description), the link (link), the image link (image_link), availability (availability) and price (price).
The title can be up to 150 characters long, the description up to 5,000 characters. The GTIN (barcode) is required for new products that have one. A handmade product or one you make yourself has none: declare it as such rather than inventing a code.
- title: what the buyer types, in a useful order. An example structure: brand + product type + key attribute + size or colour.
- description: use, measurements, materials, care. No shouting in capitals, no promotion.
- image_link: the main photo on a neutral background, with no text or logo on top, in high resolution.
- price and availability: updated at least as often as your stock changes.
- product_type and google_product_category: your own category tree and Google’s, to classify the product.
- brand, gtin, mpn: the identifiers that let Google match your offer with brand searches.
Avoid suspension: the misrepresentation policy
Account suspension is the nightmare of new shops. It almost always comes from the same policy: misrepresentation. Google can review your listing, your website, your accounts and third-party sources to judge whether a shop is trustworthy.
For practices deemed egregious, Google suspends the account immediately and without prior warning. For other violations, a warning is sent at least 7 days before any suspension. In both cases, prevention is the same:
- Total price: show the total price, with all taxes, fees and surcharges to be paid. Costs revealed only at checkout are prohibited.
- Identity: the same business name everywhere, real contact details, a complete legal notice. Presenting yourself under a false name is prohibited.
- Promises: no “24-hour delivery” if you ship from abroad in ten days, no permanent “limited stock”, no fake struck-through price.
- Required pages: terms of sale, delivery, returns, refunds, contact, easy to find from every product page.
- Payment: a secure payment page, with well-known payment methods.
The most common product disapprovals, and how to fix them
A disapproved product is not a suspended account. Merchant Center gives the reason for each product’s disapproval; here are the cases we come across most often on the shops we audit:
- Different price in the feed and on the page: the feed is not updated often enough, or a promotion is applied only on the website.
- Inconsistent availability: a product “in stock” in the feed, “sold out” on the page.
- Image disapproved: promotional text or a logo over the photo, an image that is too small, a generic image.
- Missing identifier: a branded product without a GTIN.
- Landing page unavailable: a redirect, a page blocked to crawlers, a page that requires an account.
- Sensitive category: some products (health, food supplements, weapons, adult products) follow their own rules.
After going live: keep the feed alive
A feed is never finished. Every week, open the products tab, look at new disapprovals and warnings, then at the free listings performance report: which products get clicks, which never do.
Products with no clicks at all almost always have a title that is too vague or a photo that does not stand out. Rewrite the title with the words buyers actually type (Search Console gives them to you), and change the main photo. And do not neglect the other engines: on our selling sites, 52% of visits from a search engine came through Bing and the engines that use its index, in the October 2026 sample.
Frequently asked questions
Is Google Merchant Center free?
Yes. The account and the free listings cost nothing. Only Shopping ads, managed in Google Ads, are paid per click.
Do I need Merchant Center if my SEO is already good?
Yes. It opens other placements, such as the Shopping tab, Google Images or Google Lens, that the SEO of your pages alone does not cover in the same way.
Why has my Merchant Center account been suspended?
Most often for misrepresentation: total price not shown, hidden costs, incomplete contact details, false delivery promises. Fix the website before requesting a review.
My products have no barcode: is that a problem?
No, if the product really has none (a handmade product, your own manufacture). The GTIN is required for new products that have one.
