What our own test showed
“Fournisseur dropshipping” (dropshipping supplier) is searched 480 times a month in France, “dropshipping France” 110 times. Before launching any shops, we did the calculation few videos show: for each product, the supplier price (dropshipping catalogues, stock in Europe or the United States) against the retail price observed at resellers.
The result: of 38 expensive products in European stock, 0 reached our target multiplier of 1.8. Of 14 products in US stock that we compared, the brand itself sold at the supplier catalogue price. On expensive products, the market retail price is close to the supplier price: no reseller margin appears.
We drew two decisions from this: only launch a product once the margin is proven before the first euro is spent, and sell first what we control the value of.
Calculate the real margin before choosing a product
The margin shown by a supplier catalogue is not your margin. Subtract from the selling price, in this order:
- The delivered supplier cost: product price plus shipping to the customer, at the real rate of the shipping method you will display.
- The payment fee: for example 1.5% + €0.25 per payment for a standard European card at Stripe (French pricing).
- The acquisition cost: what a buyer costs you in advertising, or your share of content work.
- Returns and disputes: products sent back, refunds, chargebacks.
- VAT and your obligations as importer or seller, to be validated by your accountant.
- The threshold: if what is left does not satisfy you, change product. We were aiming for a 1.8 multiplier between cost and selling price.
Choosing a supplier: the criteria that matter
What we rule out from the start: anything that is ingested or applied to the skin, products that invite a health claim, and items without documentation.
- Stock in the European Union: short lead times and fewer surprises on delivery. Slow delivery makes people abandon the purchase.
- Reliable parcel tracking, passed automatically to your shop.
- A clear returns policy, compatible with your obligations to the buyer.
- Complete product sheets: dimensions, materials, instructions, compliance. What the supplier cannot tell you, you will not be able to write.
- A sample ordered to your own address before anything goes on sale: quality, packaging, real lead time.
- Regulatory responsibility: depending on your set-up, you may be treated as the importer or the person placing the product on the market (marking, product safety, recycling schemes). Check this with a professional before launching, product by product.
Your obligations to the buyer do not change
In dropshipping, you are the seller. Under French law the buyer has 14 calendar days to withdraw from a distance purchase; in the event of withdrawal, the DGCCRF (the French consumer protection authority) points out that you must refund all sums paid, initial delivery costs included, within 14 days. The order button must carry the wording “commande avec obligation de paiement” (order with obligation to pay).
The delivery time you announce must be the supplier’s real lead time, not the one you would like. An over-optimistic lead time is paid for in disputes and negative reviews.
Product pages and photos that do not look like everyone else’s
The same product is sold by hundreds of shops with the same text and the same photos. For Google as for the buyer, your product page has to bring something more.
- Rewritten text: concrete use, dimensions checked on the sample, answers to the questions a buyer really asks. Never the supplier’s description copied.
- Cleaned-up supplier photos: background removed, plain background, square framing, logos and badges removed, light WebP export. On our shops, we never publish an AI-generated image of a product, and we host our own files.
- Your own photos of the sample as soon as possible: they prove the product exists and is as described.
- No imported or invented reviews, no struck-through price that was never your price: these are misleading practices.
Bringing in buyers without burning the margin
Social advertising is the dropshipping reflex, and it is often where the margin disappears. Two free channels are underused:
- Free Google Shopping: the free product listings of Merchant Center. Be careful, Google penalises misleading information there (incomplete total price, missing contact details, false identity), sometimes with an immediate suspension.
- SEO for product pages and buying guides on precise, long searches, where buying intent is strong.
On our own sites, we preferred another model when the margin was missing: bundles from €49 to €149 that group the small products, rather than sales at €5 to €12.
Frequently asked questions
Is dropshipping legal in France?
Yes. Dropshipping is a logistics arrangement, not a prohibited activity: you sell products shipped by a supplier. You remain the seller in the buyer’s eyes, with the same obligations as a traditional shop (information before the order, right of withdrawal, refund, compliance), and you must declare your activity and its income. Have your set-up validated by an accountant.
Is dropshipping still profitable in France?
It can be on products where the gap between supplier cost and retail price is real. On widely sold products, our own test found no sufficient margin: the maths must come before the shop.
How do I choose a dropshipping supplier?
Stock in the European Union, reliable tracking, a clear returns policy, complete product sheets, and a sample ordered to your address before anything goes on sale.
Who is responsible if something goes wrong?
You, as the seller: right of withdrawal, refund, product compliance. Have your set-up validated by a professional.
Can I use the supplier’s photos?
It is better to retouch them (background removed, plain background, no logo) and add your own photos of the sample, to stand out from other shops.
