Get cited by ChatGPT: the ready-to-use kit
To be cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google’s AI answers, you need three things: their crawlers must be able to read your site, your pages must rank well, and they must give clear facts that are easy to quote. This kit holds the lines to copy, the templates to fill in and the monthly test protocol we use on our own sites.

- Open your site to AI search crawlers without giving up training rights if you do not want to.
- Rewrite your key pages so that an AI can lift a sentence from them and cite you.
- Measure every month whether assistants cite you, and who they cite instead of you.
For business owners and website managers (shop, practice, tradesperson, agency) who want to appear in AI assistants’ answers. The files take a few minutes to change with your host or your site builder; the test protocol only needs a ChatGPT account.

An extract: Why deal with it now
AI assistants already send visitors, and they only cite the sites they can read.
- Look at where your visits already come fromOn our own selling sites, 13% of measured visits came from an AI assistant in October 2026, ChatGPT in 92% of cases. In your analytics tool, look for the sources chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and copilot.com.
- Understand how an AI chooses its sourcesWhen an assistant answers with a web search, it reads pages, extracts sentences and cites its sources. To be cited, you first have to be read, then be the clearest page on the question asked.
- Start from SEO, not from a trickGoogle says there are no additional requirements to appear in its AI features: an indexed page that is eligible for a snippet is enough, with the usual SEO best practices. So this kit starts with how your site is read, not with a magic file.
- Measure how far behind you areIn our study of 2,747 websites of French small businesses, 55% do not describe the business in structured data and 81% have no FAQ on the home page. Both are points in this kit.
Next: The robots.txt lines to copy
The rest is in the PDF: 31 points in all, 6 chapters, and a final page to run your website through the free audit.
Get the PDFFrequently asked questions
Do I have to pay to be cited by ChatGPT?
No. The sources cited in search answers cannot be bought: OpenAI’s search crawler must be able to read your site, and your page must answer the question clearly.
Does blocking GPTBot stop me being cited?
Not according to OpenAI: GPTBot is used for training, OAI-SearchBot for search, and the two settings are independent.
Is llms.txt enough?
No. It is a useful extra for some agents; what matters is still a readable site that ranks well, with pages that answer from the first sentence.
